International Law
Enforcement Agency
Locks Up Email with iKey

For a major International law enforcement agency, email was
becoming a more critical tool for interdepartmental
communications and sharing data on investigations. But like
any chain-of-command organization, access to data and
applications dependent on a user’s level of authorization.
This organization needed a more effective way of improving
workstation security, simplify the process of authenticating
users for authorized access to investigative information, while
making information easier to share and use. In addition, the
organization wanted a single sign-on solution for all
departmental applications and building a strong Infrastructure
for identification and authorization.

The solution was Rainbow’s iKey 2032 USB authentication
token. This law enforcement agency chose the iKey 2032 for
several reasons: it was the industry’s only FIPS 140-1 level 2
certified token with 32K of memory, it fully integrated with
Entrust for PKI, and it could easily be deployed to thousands
of users that are geographically dispersed in a short period of
time with minimal system disruption.

“We are heading towards a single sign-on solution, as each
application is modified to work with Entrust, using the iKey
2032 to store the user’s Entrust profile,” said the CIO of this
law enforcement organization. “Because the token is so easy
to use and so portable, it’s an ideal personal security device
for our users. Our workstations are now more secure with
Entrust Client and iKey. Members are more productive
because their workstation is more secure, they input more
information on their workstation with little fear of it being
compromised.”

One network administrator has his iKey on his personal key
chain and lost it in the snow. He inadvertently sent his key
chain through a high-powered snow blower, which destroyed
almost all of his keys. He found the key chain after two days
of searching for it and while the car keys were mangled, the
iKey had only a small nick in its external housing. It appeared
to be undamaged. Curious, he took it to work, plugged the
iKey into his system’s USB port and watched in amazement as
his credentials popped up on his screen.

Tens of thousands of iKey will be deployed
by the end of June 2002.

The iKey 2032 is a member of the iKey 2000 series of
authentication tokens from Rainbow eSecurity. The iKey
2032 allows users to store their digital identities on a device
that fits on their key chain. The iKey 2032 is specifically
designed for use in PKI environments where on-board private
key signing and storage is critical and can be used for
Windows 2000 logon security primarily in Europe. The iKey
2032 has 32K of memory and supports enterprise, businessto-
business and business-to-consumer applications built on all
major PKI systems, including: Entrust, CA’s eTrust PKI,
Microsoft (Internet Explorer and Outlook), Netscape,
Baltimore, Verisign, Check Point, Aventail, KyberPASS and
many others. The iKey 2032 is FIPS 140-1 Level 2 certified
